The popular belief is that bleeding gums are normal and happen to everyone. They could be a sign of something easily correctable, such as brushing too hard or not flossing every day. Or they can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, gum disease. If persistent, bleeding gums may be due to serious medical conditions such as leukemia and bleeding and platelet disorders.
Other possible causes of bleeding gums include:
- Any bleeding disorder
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
- Ill-fitting dentures
- Improper flossing
- Infection, which can be either tooth- or gum-related
- Use of blood thinners
- Vitamin K deficiency
Please let Dr. Angell or our staff know if you are experiencing bleeding gums. Dr. Angell will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums. You will want to tell him how severe the bleeding is, how long you have been experiencing it, if you have any other symptoms with the bleeding and what medications you are taking. He will then suggest some things you can do or the appropriate dental treatment.
